See our tips about how to plan for a safe visit. Garwnant is the southern gateway to the Brecon Beacons National Park. It is situated along the A, 14 miles south of Brecon and five miles north of Merthyr Tydfil. It is also within the Fforest Fawr Geopark, one of a number of places across the world designated for their international geological significance.
Garwnant Visitor Centre sits in the heart of this beautiful forest and is the starting point for walking trails, mountain biking routes for junior riders and a fully accessible trail for wheelchair users and buggies. The Visit Wales Quality Marque is awarded to attractions that have been independently assessed against the national standards of the Visitor Attraction Quality Assurance Scheme.
There are picnic tables around the main car park and along the walking trails — some have metal frames for holding disposable barbeques. The Willow Walk is a gentle all-ability trail with a number of stream crossings. After crossing three bridges, the trail goes through a willow tunnel on its way back to the visitor centre.

In the shadow of the Brecon Beacons, this historic market town is far more than a tourist location. Situated at the confluence of two rivers — the Usk and Honddu — Brecon is ideally located for residents to enjoy the great outdoors. More relaxed walks can be enjoyed on the canal that leads to surrounding villages. Endless miles of waterways can be enjoyed on foot, but many hire a canal boat and travel as far as Monmouthshire.
The town holds similar appeal for those who prefer laidback shopping trips. The Market Hall hosts a variety of monthly markets, showcasing locally sourced produce, antiques and crafts.

Felling dates : Summer The Bell and Ringing Chambers in the central tower at Brecon Cathedral were subject to a major programme of repair and reconstruction during and The original bell-chamber floor structure was dismantled and repaired, and reconstructed about 1 metre lower within the tower to accommodate the new bell frame. This structure consisted of three large principal beams spanning over 30 feet, with wall-posts and arch-braces. Although the Cathedral was built as a priory church in the thirteenth century, the date of accords with the general assumption that the tower over the central crossing was either raised or reconstructed in the sixteenth century.
An interesting anomaly is an inscribed date of on one of the main beams, 20 feet above the ringing chamber floor, that was found only when the chamber was scaffolded for the recording survey. The timber within the cuts of the date have the same patina as the surrounding surface, which is markedly different to the adjacent area chiselled away in by Gilbert Scott when inserting a supporting brace.
